Rooms are available from 14.00 on Tuesday August 8. The Summer School ends after lunch on Wednesday August 23, when all rooms must be vacated.

Registration for students

Students are expected to register at John Burnet Hall in St Andrews between 12:30 and 14:00 on Tuesday 8th August.

Dinner on Tuesday August 8

On the first evening, dinner will be served at 19.30. A cold meal will be provided for those arriving after 20.30. There will be a porter on night-duty that evening for anyone whose travel has been delayed.

Summer School Dinner

This will be held on Wednesday August 22 at 19.30. There will be a reception beforehand at 19.00. Details of other events including a traditional Scottish ceilidh, folk music and singing, whisky tasting, trips to castles, the Edinburgh Festival and the Military tattoo at Edinburgh castle will be announced shortly.

Packed lunches

On Sunday August 13 and Sunday August 20 all participants are strongly urged to join the all day excursions as there will be no lunch served on either of those days in John Burnet Hall. Everyone will be provided with a packed lunch, irrespective of whether they travel on the excursions or not.
 
Keys

Each participant will be given a room key and a key-code for the main entrance of John Burnet Hall and similarly for the Annexe. The main entrance will be locked late in the evening. Room keys should be returned on the morning of departure.

Electricity supply

This is 240 volts AC, 50 Hz.

Laundries

There is a self-service laundry in John Burnet Hall equipped with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers. These require 50p coins for a either a wash cycle or a drying cycle. Irons and ironing boards are also provided.

Telephones

All rooms have individual telephone handset(s) and individual numbers which can receive direct incoming calls. Your telephone number will be given to you on arrival. These handsets can be used for out going calls by using telephone cards obtainable from the reception at John Burnet Hall.

Car parking

Parking restrictions operate in St. Andrews from Monday to Saturday, between 09.00 and 18.00. Free parking is available at John Burnet Hall and at the School of Physical Sciences.

Lecture Programme

Lectures will be given in the School of Physical Sciences building on the North Haugh, a short walk from John Burnet Hall. Morning coffee will be served in this building between the morning lectures at 10.15 and 10:45. Afternoon tea will be served between 16.00 and 16.30 before the afternoon lecture.

Summer School Office

The Summer School Office will be located in Room 233 in the School of Physical Sciences. It will be open from 09.00-12.30 and 16.00-18.00 when lectures are taking place. The Physical Sciences building will be closed on Sundays. Poster Session

A poster evening will be held on Friday 18th at which all participant students are expected to present a poster. PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED FOR THE BEST POSTERS! See here for further details


Sporting Activities

The University of St. Andrews Physical Education Centre

Participants are entitled to use the facilities of the Centre, which include badminton, basketball, croquet, five-a-side football, netball, table-tennis, squash and volleyball. There will be small booking fees and reservations can be made in advance Equipment can be hired at the Centre.

Opening hours are 09.00-22.00 Mon.-Fri., 09.00-18.30 Saturday, closed Sundays.

Children under the age of 16 must be under direct adult supervision. Children under 7 cannot be admitted to activity areas.

East Sands Leisure Centre

This leisure complex has a large swimming pool with giant water slide, jacuzzi, steam bath, sun beds, squash, snooker, bar and restaurant. It is situated to the east of the town.

Doctors

In St. Andrews all group practices operate from the Health Centre at 68 Pipeland Road. Appointment systems are in operation, and these should normally be made at least one day in advance.

Dentists

There are several dentists in St. Andrews. The School Secretary will help locate one should you require dental treatment.

Pharmacists/Chemists

The largest pharmacy is Boots at 109 South Street. They should be able to provide for most needs.

Postal and Banking Facilities

The main post office is located at 127 South Street. There are several banks in both Market Street and South Street.
