Future materials will be "bionic" -- combining living and synthetic components to gain novel functionality. We are working to establish design principles governing: the colloidal assembly of bacterial composites; microbial communities inhabiting microporous soft media; soft materials containing active enzymes; soft gels as matrices for cells and tissues.
